Prayerwalking for Others

It is important to have a place where you go to spend time with the Lord and converse with Him through prayer. However, the beautiful thing about prayer is it’s not confined to prayer closets and prayer rooms alone. One of the best uses of prayer in our relationship with the Lord is prayerwalking.

As your prayer life develops, you will find yourself talking with the Lord throughout the day. This unbroken fellowship with God is the first example of what prayer walking is. But it doesn’t end here! Prayerwalking is a strategic form of prayer with a specific focus, for a specific group of people, in a specific geographical area. To incorporate this form of prayer in your life, simply take the first step.

As the needs in your church and community are brought to light, one of the first lines of defense for meeting these needs is prayer. We read in John 10:10 that Satan “comes only to steal and kill and destroy”. Covering the streets, neighborhoods, and community with prayer renders his efforts useless! It is important that you personally, and your church, get out there and “walk” the streets of the neighborhoods and businesses in your town. If you desire to see your church minister to your city in this way, begin to pray for the location where you should start. As you pray, ask the Lord to encourage the hearts of those in your church to desire praying for your community in this way. Pray for the actual day when this walk will take place.

Next, pick a date and time to prayerwalk this location the Lord has laid on your heart. If there are some in your church who physically are unable to walk, they can drive around neighborhoods and businesses as they pray. This is also a good way to “prayerwalk” neighborhoods that may not be safe to go alone, or even with a group. Plan a time to train those going on how to pray as they walk before the prayerwalking event takes place. Map out the area, meet before the groups go out, and agree on a time to meet back at the church to share what happened. Close that time of sharing with prayer that specifically addresses what was shared, as well as the desire to prayerwalk again.

The South Carolina Baptist Convention is joining with NAMB in the God’s Plan for Sharing evangelism campaign in order to fulfill the Great Commission in South Carolina by every believer sharing and every person hearing by the year 2020. How can you do your part? Get out there, start walking, and see how the Lord moves because of the prayers said for those who are in need in, and around, your church. Lives will be changed!
